From: ZiggySoft¨
Subject: Autolink 1.2

AutoLinkª is a program that allows the user to automatically reconnect
broken links, lost because of change of directories, site reorganization,
cloning templates, etc.

Unlike other similar programs, AutoLinkª isn't limited to reporting the
broken link; rather, it searchesÑbeginning from your local root site
directoryÑfor the new link, and optionally substitutes it for the broken one
on your HTML page.

This means, if your pages is full of links, it saves you hours of manual
work.

BBTidy v1.0b6: BBEdit plugin checks and corrects HTML and XML (bb-tidy-10b6.hqx)

From: Terry Teague
Subject: BBTidy v1.0b6: BBEdit plugin checks and corrects HTML and XML
source

When editing HTML it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there
was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy
editing into nicely layed out markup? Well now there is! Dave Raggett's
HTML TIDY is a free utility for doing just that. It also works great on the
atrociously hard to read markup generated by specialized HTML editors and
conversion tools, and can help you identify where you need to pay further
attention on making your pages more accessible to people with disabilities.

Tidy is able to fix up a wide range of problems and to bring to your
attention things that you need to work on yourself. Each item found is
listed with the line number and column so that you can see where the
problem lies in your markup. Tidy won't generate a cleaned up version when
there are problems that it can't be sure of how to handle. These are logged
as "errors" rather than "warnings".

BBTidy is a BBEdit (and BBEdit Lite) plugin for Mac OS designed to check
and correct HTML and XML source. It is based on the freely available "tidy"
program by Dave Raggett ().

For more information on "tidy", visit the author's web site at

Visit for the
latest version of BBTidy.

04 Jun 00: v1.0b6

Updated to latest "tidy" source of 30 Apr 00.

System Requirements: (Any Macintosh with a 68020 or better processor, any
version of System software (although it has NOT been tested on anything
earlier than 7.0). Also requires BBEdit or BBEdit Lite.

When composing a website, many elements come back, like a standard
banner, or
the same footer, etc. In traditional html, you'd have to copy&paste these
elements over and over again in the individual pages. An update
nightmare!

Beyond HTML allows you to:
- use include files
- use macro definitions
- conditional compilation
- tidbits, like: C-style comments, automatic modification date, special
characters,..

Beyond HTML is implemented as a MetroWerks' CodeWarrior Plugin. CW Pro 2
or higher is required.

it useful if you maintain a Web page (or a whole site!) or if you have
a long list of bookmarks.

The main changes since version 1.0.1 are:

- Integration with URL Manager Pro 1.4b13 or later.
- Link names are displayed in addition to addresses.
- Support for all HTML 3.2 tags, including BASE HREF.

Big Brother requires the Thread Manager (which is part of System 7.5).

Cascade Light 1.0 - Cascading Style Sheets Designer (cascade-light-10.hqx)

From: terje@in-progress.com
Subject: Cascade Light 1.0 - Cascading Style Sheets Designer

Cascade Light 1.0

Cascade Light is a comprehensive Cascading Style Sheets designer for Web
authors. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) give Web designers better control
over presentation style, makes website management more efficient and leads
to a more adaptable and accessible web. A Cascading Style Sheet can set
fonts, colors, white space and other layout aspects of an HTML document in
an efficient and flexible manner. CSS is a style sheet standard developed
by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and is supported by web browsers
such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.

Cascade Light provides a dialog on the Mac to define any style setting that
can be expressed in CSS. Cascade can even automatically apply a Cascading
Style Sheet to an HTML document in such a way that the style sheet is
emulated for older browsers that don't support CSS. Thus webmasters can
benefit from Cascading Style Sheets now and still maintain the design for
older browsers.

Cascade Light works on both PPC and 68K Macs with System 7.0 or later and
2.9 Mb free RAM. More information about Cascade Light is available from:

http://interaction.in-progress.com/cascade

[ The application has been uploaded to the FTP site. It should go in the
Internet/HTML folder, eventually with a copy in the Internet/WWW folder.
Cascade Light can be included in the CD-ROM distribution (contact me for
legal issues) ]

From: ikrieg@rc.net
Subject: Cobwebber 3.0

Cobwebber 3.0 is a program in the form of a Hypercard stack for
building web sites. It edits the HTML directly, with a system for adding
tags quickly. You can easily add your own tags, even dynamic ones, which
can have fill-in text, options, colors, local file links, and other such
things. For instance, there's a tag which asks for the number of rows and
columns you want in your table, and then makes the table. This tag is open
for editing and copying for your own tags. Full online help is provided.
Cobwebber will never be quite out of date, because you can always add new
tags for new features. I also hope that people will take advantage of the
ability to export and import tags. You could download small files enabling
style sheets, XML, new HTML stuff, and anything else that may crop up.
Cobwebber allows use of the standard color picker for picking colors, and
has a file name and link checker. If you make web stuff, get Cobwebber, for
no more than $20!
Users of 1.2 will be glad to hear that Cobwebber 3.0 is a great
improvement in many ways. This version is also thoroughly beta-tested.
(Thanks, testers!)

htmElevation--Web page optimizer for the Macintosh (gst-htm-elevation.hqx)

Download gst-htm-elevation.hqx (221,721 KB)

From: gswann@primenet.com
Subject: htmElevation--Web page optimizer for the Macintosh

htmElevation does two things: It enhances the typography of your
web pages, and it substantially optimizes them. The enhancements
include ISO-entity conversion and optional "curly" quote and dash
conversion. These changes may seem impractical, but they will
make your pages look more professional. And converting special
characters to their ISO entities may make the difference between
readable text and gibberish with some browsers.

Why optimize?

No one has to be sold on the practicality of HTML optimization.
Optimized pages store smaller. They transmit smaller and faster.
They are interpreted by Web browsers _much_ faster: Because they
are received by the browser faster, and because there's less
work for the browser to do. The text on a web page processed by
htmElevation snaps onto the screen, giving your users something
to read while the graphics load.

How does it work?

htmElevation parses your HTML, typographically enhancing the text
and optimizing the HTML coding. Your pages will have the same
appearance after processing by htmElevation, but they'll be
faster and better-looking. Your files will be from 2% to 25%
smaller, and the code we're optimizing is code that slows
browsers down. Your pages will transmit faster, and they'll
display _much_ faster.

Why bother?

Because you can have smart quotes and dashes. You can have
ISO-entity conversion so you'll _know_ that your legal and
math symbols and diacritical marks will be readable. You can have
HTML optimization that will make your pages transmit faster and
display _much_ faster. You can have all that in no time with
no effort. If you care about your users, if you care about
quality, if you care about putting your best foot forward--you
need htmElevation.

Try it out...

Run htmElevation on your Web pages and drop them on your browser.
See how much faster they load. See how much more professional
they look. See for yourself at:

Subject: HTML2XTags v1.0b8

HTML2XTags filters the text portion of an HTML file (ignoring images and MANY
other tags!) into a Quark XPress XTag-formatted tagfile.

Does a simple, version 1.0 job of interpreting italics, bold, center and
paragraph
demarcations. Leaves image information embedded in the text -- search for
IMAGE.
Supports headers and horizontal rules.

Supports font face, color and size. FONT tags may be nested. Writes a
separate
file in InDesign colortable format, after xtags file has been written.

Supports "ISO Latin 1" to Mac character macros -- i.e., the ’ style,
plus all the
codes listed by name in Elizabeth Castro's HTML 4 book, i.e., Á
etc., plus
the sort-of-undocumented   macro for non-breaking space.

Does NOT support frames, tables, lists, indents or CSS. All unsupported
tags are elided.

This program and a few minutes in InDesign are all you need to read
(braindead) HTML
and make (really nice) PDF. Freeware, absolutely "at your risk" and
unsupported.

History:

if any will be an InDesign plug-in or Quark XPress XTension, or
both, supporting
style sheets (CSS2), but that will not be freeware :)

1.0b5 - found and fixed a longstanding bug that ate the first tag if it came
immediately after output of the xtag header, i.e., "";
fixed double quote glitch in tag.

1.0b4 - fixed ampersand bug that would eat text if HTML did not use &
Headers
and font sizes working properly (although these are W3C
"deprecated" tags!),
font color guesses at an appropriate xtag to replace the RGB
codes, without creating a color table. No tables yet. No HTML 3 or 4,
especially, no CSS. Those are coming. Also, fixed a situation
where an
unmatched would turn italics ON, since the xtag is a
toggle! It
seems that Netscape is really very lenient about bad HTML! :-)

HTML Cleaner is an AppleScript for BBEdit 5.0 designed to perform a few
common HTML chores:

€ Based on the presence of a frameset in your document the script will
identify your page either as HTML 4.0 Transitional or HTML 4.0 Frameset.

€ It adds an empty alt="" attribute to image tags that don't have an alt
attribute already.

€ It gets rid of heights, since they are not permitted in HTML 4.0
Transitional.

€ It will by default get rid of heights, since they are not
permitted in HTML 4.0 Transitional. MSIE still uses them, though. There
is a preference setting, should you choose to keep table heights.

€ It will remove a stray "frame" attribute in a table, when no value is
specified for it.

€ HTML Cleaner will discontinue the existence of gridx, showgridx,
usegridx, gridy, showgridy, usegridy in your tables.

€ It will attempt to place your noframes tags inside your frameset,
which is where they should be.

€ The script will take (illegal) spacer tags and replace them with a
dot.gif image. it's up to you to make sure there are dot.gif images in
the referenced places.

€ It will remove xpos attributes in a
tag.

€ In BBEdit 5.0, the script will run the CyberCleaner tool, which gets
rid of (some) excess font tags.

CAUTION! This script works fine for me, but may need some adjustments
for your specific HTML. Please test thoroughly on a COPY of your site.

From: (Rene Brouwer) rbrouwer@xs4all.nl

HTML ColorChooser is a simple freeware HTML application intended to take
the pain out of web color selection. With HTML ColorChooser you can quickly
judge 140 text colors over 140 background colors, giving you an awesome
19600 possible combinations at the tip of your mouse. Requires a HTML
browser that recognizes frames, tables and JavaScript. HTML ColorChooser
was tested using Netscape Navigator 3.0.

12-01-97 (version 1.0):
Added a side by side view to allow mixing and matching of frame background
colors.
The side by side view also cuts down on scrolling up and down to judge a
font color on several different backgrounds.

Enjoy!

HTML Image Indexer 1.0 (AS) (html-indexer-appl.hqx)

Download html-indexer-appl.hqx (13,734 KB)

From: pompamagna@geocities.com
Subject: HTML Image Indexer 1.0 (AS)

HTML Image Indexer 1.0 by Giovanni Giusti
This applet will create a HTML table of all files you drop on it, then
save it into an "index.html" file inside the same folder as the first
file you dropped. If an "index.html" file is already there, you will get
an index-(random).html file. But it shouldn't be there in the first
place, should it? You get the choice of how many columns there should be
in your table. This is because it may be hard to change that from a HTML
editor...

What's it for?
Guess you have a folder full of GIFs and you want to put them up on a Web
page. Do you create an HTML table, then import them one by one? No more!
Run HTML Indexer, then tweak the looks of your page with a HTML editor.
HTML Indexer will include in the index any file that you drag on it. It's
up to you to use it wisely.

Coming Up:
The ability to recognize if the file is an image file, and to exclude
other files accordingly. If requested, I may also add the possibility of
choosing where to save the resulting HTML code.

Notice:
HTML indexer is freeware, but it is not in the public domain. You are free
to copy it, use it, distribute it, and improve on it, as long as it is not
for profit. I would like to receive a copy of any modified version of it, and if it
goes out in a CD, well, how about a free copy for me? I already received
proposals to include other applets of mine in CDs, but I haven't received
one yet!

Download hyperize-2.hqx (51,720 KB)

From: jcj@mail.usyd.edu.au
Subject: Hyperize v2

Hyperize2 is a standalone drag-and-drop application that converts plain
text documents into HTML. Hyperize2 does what is required to duplicate, as
far as practicable, the structure and appearance of your text on a Web
page.

Hyperize2 creates pages, frames, or fragments of HTML code from files that are
dropped on it or opened interactively, or from text on the Clipboard. It
arranges for HTML formatting commands that reproduce your document's structure
in terms of paragraphs, lines, indents and, to some extent, columns. It also
translates characters which are special either to HTML or to the Macintosh into
HTML-acceptable equivalents.

If you've used Hyperize 1.1 before, you'll notice the following new features:
Hyperize2 runs native on a PowerPC.
Hyperize2 can now create whole pages, frames, or fragments of
HTML-encoded text.
Hyperize2 can now read from and/or write to the Clipboard.
Hyperize2 is much smarter than its predecessor about indentation, and
somewhat smarter about columnar layouts.
Hyperize2 has two new formatting options. They concern whether leading
white space on a line is intended to introduce new paragraphs or new
column-aligned list items, and the distance between column stops.
Hyperize2 stores its default preferences in a preferences file, and
allows the user to create secondary settings files for particular types
of task, such as hyperizing justified text fragments or whole program
listings. These files can be opened from within the application or
double-clicked to launch the application with their settings.
Hyperize2 lets you browse for documents and applications when setting
the File Creator for its output files. It also allows you to choose an
output file name and location that's different from the default.
Hyperize2 works on any type of Macintosh with System 7 or later. It can run in
about 128Kb of memory, in which any number of files of any size can be
processed. Operations involving the Clipboard require more, according to
the size of its contents.
The (fat binary) application itself is about 64k.
Freeware. Feedback is appreciated.

From: Richard Rathe
Subject: Jrju v0.9 (The Spider) Tool for Self-Organizing Hypertext

Jrju v0.9 (The Spider) Tool for Self-Organizing Hypertext

Jrju (Chinese for spider) is a Perl program that weaves hypertext
"notebooks" from plain text files. An author creates notebook pages using
the JTX markup format. Jrju will process a directory of JTX files into a
cross-linked collection of HTML pages. Jrju rebuilds the entire notebook
each time so there are no broken links or orphan pages.

Summary of Features

Uses plain text files (no HTML markup!)
Automatic creation of hierarchical indexes
Automatic linking of cross-references
Automatic linking of inverse references
Automatic placement of graphics
Automatic linking of external resources (URLs)
Automatic linking of email addresses
Support for modest HTML formatting (paragraphs, lists)
Available without cost for non-commercial use

Files Included in this Package

extras folder ...... contains help and graphic files
jrju folder ........ the user's manual
Jrju App ........... the application (includes MacPerl runtime)
Jrju Droplet ....... the "droplet" for use with MacPerl
Jrju09.pl .......... the Perl script in plain text
readme.html ........ more information and links
title.ttx .......... title file template

Installation

First you must edit the OS variable to match your system:

$os = 'Mac'; # Mac, DOS, or Unix

Next install Perl, or use the runtime application (Mac only).

If you are using a Macintosh, save Jrju as a MacPerl "droplet". To use the
program simply drag and drop notebook directories containing JTX files on
this icon.

If you are using Unix, save Jrju as an executable script. You will need to
modify the first #! line to match your system and set the file to
"executable." To use the program, type at the command line:

jrju book1 book2 etc.

If you are using DOS/Windows, save jrju as a text (.pl) file. To use the
program, type at the command line:

perl jrju.pl book1 book2 etc.

Where book1 and book2 are directories containing JTX files.

Jrju is currently under development - use it with caution. This software is
provided "as is" with no promise of support or guarantee of suitability.
Please send bug reports, questions, or comments to rrathe@ufl.edu.

Quick Start Directions

1. Create a new directory/folder.
2. Copy the "extras" folder into it.
3. Copy the title.ttx file and modify it as needed.
4. Create a few ".jtx" files.
- Plain (ASCII) text
- File title on first line
- Blank line between paragraphs
5. Invoke Jrju by dragging the directory on top of the application (Mac)
or starting the program from the command line as described above.
6. Open "index.html" with your browser.
7. Repeat steps #4 through #6 as you revise your content.

When editing HTML it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there
was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy
editing into nicely laid out markup? Well now there is! MacTidy is a
Macintosh application designed for doing just that. MacTidy checks and
corrects HTML and XML to make it compliant with the Worldwide Web
Consortium (W3C) HTML standards.

MacTidy also works great on the atrociously hard to read markup generated
by specialized HTML editors and conversion tools, and can help you identify
where you need to pay further attention on making your pages more
accessible to people with disabilities.

MacTidy is able to fix up a wide range of problems and to bring to your
attention things that you need to work on yourself. Each item found is
listed with the line number and column so that you can see where the
problem lies in your markup. MacTidy won't generate a cleaned up version
when there are problems that it can't be sure of how to handle. These are
logged as "errors" rather than "warnings".

MacTidy corrects the markup in a way that matches where possible the
observed rendering in popular browsers from Netscape and Microsoft.

MacTidy is based on the freely available "Tidy" program by Dave Raggett.
MacTidy performs in a compatible way to "Tidy", but has a graphical user
interface (GUI). Balloon Help is available for the configuration dialog.

For more information on Dave Raggett's "Tidy", browse the enclosed HTML
file "overview.html", visit the author's web site at
, or EMail .

The current version of MacTidy and other products based on "Tidy" for Mac
OS can be found at .

System Requirements :
Any Macintosh (except Macintosh 128K, Macintosh 512Ke, Macintosh Plus,
Macintosh Portable, PowerBook 100, Macintosh Classic) running System 7.0 or
later. A/UX is also supported.

The "Carbon" version of MacTidy requires Mac OS 8.1 + CarbonLib 1.0.2 or
later (Mac OS 8.6 + CarbonLib 1.1 or later), or Mac OS X (DP4 and Public
Beta currently supported).

Disk space required is less than 1 MB; available free memory required is
approximately 2 MB minimum, more memory is recommended.

From: wink@nicom.com (Wink)
Subject: map2html 0.1b2 -- a perl imagemap utility

map2HTML is a utility for quickly converting NCSA server image maps into
client-side maps, suitable for pasting into web pages.

To use, simply drop a text file containing the image map data onto
map2HTML's icon. The map will be read, and converted into HTML tags,
which will be written to a file,
imagemapname.out,
in the same folder as the original NCSA map. map2HTML was written
specifically for use with Rowland Smith's WebMap, though it should work
without problems with any maps in NCSA format.

In addition to the standalone application, a filter is included for users
of the Alpha text editor and MacPerl - simply drop map2HTML.pl in your text
filters folder: it is designed to work with any version of Alpha or Alpha
Lite which uses tab stops in HTML mode.

It also checks links, both local, FTP- and<br /> HTTP-based links.<br /> <br /> FEATURES:<br /> =========<br /> - Displays the text of the open file and highlights the exact location of<br /> errors.<br /> <br /> - Checks local as well as Internet links (that is, HTTP and FTP -- no other<br /> program does this).<br /> <br /> - Checks the case of local links to ensure they are UNIX-safe in addition<br /> to being Mac-safe, which is not done even by programs that "specialise" in<br /> HTML link checking.<br /> <br /> - Obtains the document base URL from the file's Finder comment. No other<br /> program does this.<br /> <br /> - Lists up to 8192 errors in HTML documents. Explains why PageInspector<br /> reported the error, and how you can correct it (or even have PageInspector<br /> correct it for you.)<br /> <br /> - Contextual menus provide shortcuts to commands (even in pre-MacOS 8 systems).<br /> <br /> - Complete AppleScript support, including a scripts menu. Full<br /> scriptability lets you extend PageInspector's automatic error corrections,<br /> and select errors in your favourite text editor for correction.<br /> <br /> - Uses a modern MacOS 8 3D platinum interface.<br /> <br /> - Many preferences offers full customisation of PageInspector's behaviour.<br /> <br /> PageInspector works on all Macs running System 7 or later. It is<br /> accelerated for Power Macintosh. Open Transport and a Power Macintosh are<br /> required for Internet link checking. VSE Web <br /> Site Turbo strips unneeded data from web pages, resulting in size <br /> reductions averaging from 20 to 50 percent based on content. It also <br /> optimizes JPEG and GIF images.<br /> <br /> The appearance of the web page is not changed in any way.<br /> <br /> The faster a web site loads, the better is the visitor's impression <br /> of the company, the web site and the product. It's a simple freeware HTML<br /> application intended to take the pain out of web color selection. The<br /> original HTML ColorChooser was based on the 140 "Netscape" colors. This<br /> new version, WebSafe ColorChooser, is based on the 216 colors in the web<br /> safe palette.<br /> <br /> We all know those useful little programs that allow you to pick a color<br /> from a color wheel and show you the nearest Hex value. But it still<br /> takes a lot of clicking before you see your text over your background<br /> (and decide to do it differently alltogether). With Websafe ColorChooser<br /> you can quickly judge 216 text colors over 216 background colors, giving<br /> you an awesome 46656 possible combinations at the tip of your mouse.<br /> <br /> You will need a HTML browser that knows how to handle frames, tables,<br /> and JavaScript.
