Eridanus has released Archer 2.0.0. New in this release are commands to
delete the displayed image from the hard drive, remove the displayed
image from the slide show, and augmented navigation commands for
international users. All commands carry on Archers mash-the-keyboard
simplicity. In addition the single-keystroke commands, all new commands
also have standard menu and command key equivalents.

Archer is a free, easy-to-use slide show play for OS X. Use Archer to
combine still images, audio, and video files into the same slide. With
Archer you can also run several slide shows at the same time. Each slide
show can be configured and sized differently. To make navigating through
the images easy, a scroll bar is available when not in full screen mode.
You can even navigate through the images while the slide show is
playing...just in case you want to go back an see an image again.

Argybee is a simple, freeware, RGB colour-Hex calculator.

This application is a very simple program to allow software (and web)
developers to calculate a hexadecimal representation of an RGB colour.

In addition the value of the RGB sliders is also displayed at the
left hand side of the window. This is useful when you are using
development environments that require the RGB colour in the form
RGB(red, green, blue) where the colours are a number from 0 to 255
(rather than hex).

Note that you can also enter a hexadecimal number into the 'Hex
Value' field, and Argybee will display the correct colour.

Argybee will run on all Macintosh computers. It requires 1300K of
free RAM, and a minimum of System 7.1.

A version for Windows 95 (minimum) is also available.

Audiocorder is a program which allows your Mac to act as volume operated
(VOX) audio recorder. It allows you to set the volume that the sound must
reach to begin recording, and the volume at which it should end recording.
It also allows you to set the trigger length for the start and stop values,
which helps you to eliminate recording short bursts of sound or ending the
recording process during a short pause (such as in normal speach). It may
also be used as a normal manually operated recorder. In addition, it can
play AIFF sound files, including those created with other sound programs.

Each sound file is stored in AIFF format, a Macintosh standard sound
format. The audio is sampled at 11, 22 or 44 kHz, with a sample size of 8
or 16 bits, either monophonic or stereo. The name of each file contains the
date and time (down to seconds) the recording began.

Audiocorder is used in a wide variety of applications, including digitizing
LPs and tapes, recording animals and other natural sounds, and automated
recording of radio transmissions.

Audiocorder is native for both 68K and PPC systems.

EPStoPICT is a Macintosh application from Art Age Software, the makers of
the award-winning application epsConverter(tm). EPStoPICT can read any
portable Level 1 EPS or PostScript file and convert it into a Macintosh PICT
file, suitable for editing with a Macintosh drawing application, or for

EPStoPICT parses the actual PostScript code in the EPS file and translates
it into PICT data. Although this process takes longer than simply extracting
a PICT preview from the EPS file, there are several advantages to this
approach:

(1) Some EPS files do not have a PICT preview to extract!

(2) Often the PICT preview is not an accurate representation of the EPS
file's true contents. It may be poorly rendered, or black and white only,

(3) When present, PICT previews are usually stored as low-resolution
bitmaps. This essentially prevents them from being scaled or edited.

EPStoPICT produces a vector PICT representation of the PostScript data,
which allows for better scaling (zooming in and out), and even a limited
degree of editing with several popular drawing applications.

Fantasyscapes Volume IV has arrived -- and it's better than ever! Volume
IV consists of five high resolution (1280x960, millions of colors)
Desktop images by renowned artist Rick Buck, and represent the artist's

FriezingWorks is a freeware HyperCard stack which creates friezes
from what you draw using the seven frieze groups. It has two
purposes. For those interested in transformation geometry, it can be
used to demonstrate and/or explore the seven frieze groups. For
people who aren't so mathematically minded, FriezingWorkz can simply
be used to make nice frieze patterns for use in borders or other
artwork. All you have to do is draw a base pattern and choose which
frieze group you'd like to use for the frieze - FriezingWorkz adds
extra black pixels to make sure the pattern has the required
symmetries, and then makes the frieze.

This is the Japanese version of the GXMask package.

Some applications need the GXGraphics Extension installed
in order to function correctly. Other applications (a few Desktop
Publishing packages are the most common offenders) refuse to run if this
extension is installed. This used to mean that you'd have to reboot your
Mac to switch between applications, which isn't very friendly behavior.
GXMask is a Control Panel which lets you hide the existance of the
GXGraphics Extension from all applications other than ones you select (a
list of applications which are known to need GXGraphics is included).
This allows you to have GXGraphics installed, and happily use
applications which would normally refuse to run with it installed. In
all the cases I've tested, this has proven safe, since those
applications don't call GXGraphics, so the fact that it's installed
would have little effect on them anyhow. Do Not use GXMask with the full
QuickDraw GX installation. It will keep GXPrinting from functioning
correctly. GXMask is only intended for use with GXGraphics 1.1.6 or
later.

Image Sizer is a simple image viewing program for Mac OS X which
shows the size of each image and will create an HTML 'img' tag for
it. I wrote it because none of the simple image viewing programs I
have shows the size, and it's sometimes a hassle to open a
full-featured image editing program application just to find out the
dimensions of an image to put in the HTML. For convenience I also
added a button which would copy the full img tag to the clipboard,
complete with width, height, src and alt filled in and the border set
to 0 the way I like it.

How to use:

To use Image Sizer, just drag an image file onto its icon, open an
image from the Open command in Image Sizer's File Menu, or drag an
image file onto the area on an existing Image Sizer window where an
image is displayed. If you want to use the image in an HTML document,
change the description from the default if you like (the description
will appear in the 'alt' attribute of the 'img' tag) and press the
'Copy img tag' button. Paste the tag into your HTML document and do
what you like with it.

This droplet will change an IPTC file info file created by FotoStation Pro
version 4 and later into a Photoshop file info file.

Both applications create file-info files using the same standard and data order.
The data forks, which you can view in a developer-oriented text editor like
BBEdit, are indistinguishable. However, owing to the fact that Photoshop (Mac)
has a blind spot with regard to any file info file not of type "8BFI" and of
creator code "8BIM", these files are invisible to it unless their attributes are
changed in the Finder or by some other application or utility. FileBuddy and
Snoop!, etc, are all very good for this purpose, but if you want to do it
quick-n-dirty and add your new spiffy customized IPTC info that you wrote over in
FS Pro to a file you have open in Photoshop, then this droplet fills that bill.

This droplet requires Sändi's Addditions (included in the archive) to be placed
in the Scripting Additions folder of your startup disk before it is used.
Unfortunately, even in Mac OS 9.x, AppleScript on its own can't change file types
and creators without help from an OSAX. These are still read-only properties in
the Finder, and rather than burdening your system and your AppleScript with the
task of creating an all-new file and writing in the data from the old, then
trashing the new, I am distributing this droplet with Sändi's so that changes may
be made to the same file as was created by you, the user, in FS Pro. Aren't I a
nice guy?

One caveat: this is a single-file only version, i.e., it will only convert one
file at a time. You are welcome to customize and wrestle with the code to get it
to work on multiple files, multiple files in closed folders, multiple files on
network disks or Zips or Floppies or what have you; I have just given you all a
foundation script to work with. Good ideas often become better ideas in the hands
of others, is my philosophy.

Standard freeware disclaimers applicable to your jurisdiction/lifestyle apply
here as well.

Okay, so now it's time for you to get converting. So get to it!

with Ray Dream's lack of file formats. It requires that all the images

name.

If you dislike either of these requirements than you are free to modify it,
the download includes source code. If you make any good improvements to it

This is the first draft of an ongoing project. It is open source.
It is spinoff from Mike Beam's column on cocoa programming.
I have a cannon elph powershot 200 2 megapixel digital camera which
I wanted to turn into a xerox machine for my research.

To inspire this (other than I want glory to get me credibility for
a post doc in quantum optics somewhere) :
Why pay xerox?
Why pay with filesize and lose hard drive space or burn too many cd's?
Why not hyperlink derivations for all books with adobe acrobat. I
have done this in journal publications in pdf format, but not with textbook
excerpts.

I only needed black and white and that reduces the filesize cost
from color by as much as 24 times. To this end, I've invented the notion of
"convolution thresholding", thresholding a sharpening convolution of the
digital camera image. This is something like the human eye does with
lateral inhibition, that is something like a digital Laplacian. Not quite.
I am subtracting out the background and thresholding to black and white.

These convolutions can be sped up with being modularized in FFT's,
fast fourier transforms. It would take about a semester to do, as I have
done, with butterfly diagrams guiding coding. Don't see anything in the
next step frameworks to assist development time, yet... When I or someone
else gets a FFT in it it will be one lean mean xerox copying machine.

Note, not exactly 24 times reduction as above because the .JPG file
you get out of a camera is compressed whereas the tiff you throw into a pdf
file is not, not at least as I understand how to do it. There is no JPG
compression for black and white. But, sometimes I can get costs of 16k, 32k
and 50k for page that started out as a 1Meg JPG and that's more than 24
times (I use other tricks, exporting from iPhoto by rescale when resolution
not required and cropping).

Photo Viewer is a simple Macintosh program for browsing folders full of
images. It works with images, such as those created by Adobe Photoshop or
Kodak Picture Transfer, which have a PICT resource that serves as a preview.

previews. Clicking on a preview tries to display it. Option clicking on a
preview launches the relevant application to display it. Photo Viewer uses
QuickTime to interpret images.

Use the pop up menu in the upper left hand of the browser window to navigate
folders. Use the Next and Previous buttons to look at different pages of
previews. Resize the window to show more or fewer previews.

Photo Viewer also works with Adobe Illustrator files and probably those of

There is a document report option, and an output order form setup which
provides the output bureau with output specifiations, and job and contact
details. After collecting, Delivery can compress the delivery folder into a
Stuffit self expanding file.

Delivery, drag a QuarkXPress document onto its icon or the dropbox within
its main window. There is also a batch option to collect many documents at a

Designers have always used models to visualize their
ideas. In the past models required craftsmanship and a lot
of time consuming manual work. Then along came computers
with completely new and exciting sets of applications for
computer graphics, computer aided design, 3D modeling and

photo realistic images, having color, surface structure,
shadows, and so on but...

The problem is that these images remain in the computer and
even when they simulate 3D are still only in the 2D world.
Designers prefer physical models that they can see, feel
and touch. Like a picture is worth a thousand words, one
model is like a thousand pictures and can give a much more
concrete cognition of an object.

This is what Touch-3D is all about. A three dimensional
object is first designed on screen and can be unfolded
automatically to maximize the use of any building
material. Boats, tents, buildings and any 3D object you
can imagine is first designed on screen and using the
smart unfolding algorithms in the program, unfolded and
then printed out. Once printed and cut along the edges,
the model can then be folded back together to create the
actual physical 3D object. This is a lot quicker, easier
and less expensive then carving a wooden model or moulding
from plastic or clay and allows for quick changes and
updates.

Touch-3D is easy to use and comes with a powerful range of
drawing and modeling tools, allowing you to create
sophisticated 3D models. Experienced Mac users will feel

Many Windows applications can export or save to WMF files.
WMF stands for "Windows Meta File" and is a vector and
bitmap graphics format. Unfortunately, this format is
only really common on the Windows platform. Hence this
utility is able to take a WMF file and export it to PDF
such that MacOS-X applications can render and use the
drawings and images.

There are some limitations in this conversion process,
and this is only a first beta. If you have any
