Subject: Wadtool: a Quake texture editing utility
NEW TEXTURE EDITING UTILITY GIVES UNPRECEDENTED CONTROL TO QUAKE MAP
DESIGNERS
QUAKEINTOSH, December 2, 1998 -- http://wadtool.quakeintosh.com --
Phaedrus Qtensilius today announced the release of Wadtool, a new
graphics management utility for game developers. Specifically, Wadtool is
a must-have program for users of all abilities who design level maps for
idsoftware¹s popular game Quake.
Until now, there has been no complete Mac solution for editing Quake
textures (the graphic images which make up the walls and objects in level
maps). Wadtool fills a long-awaited niche, in providing superior control
over all aspects of texture editing. Wadtool unleashes the graphic artist
that lurks within the modeler, providing unprecedented control over the
graphics in all single-player and multi-player Quake maps the user
designs!
The product name derives from its flagship ability to modify WAD files,
the standard format for graphics collections from which most Quake
editing tools (such as Quiver, a map editing utility by Scott Kevill)
obtain their textures. For Wadtool, though, handling WADs is just the tip
of the iceberg.
Wadtool is designed for use in conjunction with other image-editing
programs to allow users to integrate their artistic creations into new
and existing Quake maps. Wadtool¹s user interface has been designed for
easy, intuitive use while simultaneously providing an array of advanced
tools. Here is a partial sampling of the nifty things the user can do
with Wadtool:
- edit any number of files at a time (limited only by available
memory)
- extract the textures from a BSP (map) and convert them into a new
WAD
- edit the textures in a BSP without having to recompile the map
- extract all textures from a PAK (total conversion) by simply
opening it
- resize any texture, with automatic image re-scaling
- adjust the colour balance of a texture using RGB sliders
- preview moving textures (liquids, as well as multi-frame
animations)
- remove unwanted "fullbright" colours with a simple menu command
- create sky transparencies with a simple menu command
- use the complete Edit menu suite, including cut, copy, paste and
undo
- copy textures between files and share them with other programs
- globally adjust the view brightness to your liking
Included in the Wadtool distribution, along with full documentation, is a
technical primer on how Quake textures work. With this background, even
the novice map maker can exploit Wadtool to its fullest.
Wadtool requires a Power Macintosh computer with MacOS 8.1 or later.
Wadtool is shareware, and costs $10US to register. Registered users will
enjoy full functionality and other perks (the unregistered version of
Wadtool has a couple of features disabled).
