From: admin@rampell.com
Subject: AlwaysONline 2.03 Released

AlwaysONline works with nearly all versions of America Online (including
4.0) to recognize and dismiss all different types of "timer" messages
that, if unanswered, could cause you to be logged off AOL.
Fully configurable, AlwaysONline can be set to do everything from playing
a sound when a timer message is detected, to switching AOL to the front
whenever AOL creates any type of window in the background.
Version 2.0 of AlwaysONline sports a new interface, and a new, more
powerful learning feature, in additional to some extra features such as
"SmartCheck."

AlwaysONline is compatible with all 68020 and greater Macintoshes (i.e.
Macintosh II and up), and is compatible with Mac OS 7.0 and higher.

Perl script to strip AOL headers (aol-header-strip-pl.hqx)

Download aol-header-strip-pl.hqx (9,724 KB)

From: BillC55122@aol.com
Subject: Perl script to strip AOL headers

Attached is a MacPerl droplet that will read in an America Online mail file
saved as text, and will output a BBEdit Lite text file on the desktop with
the trailing AOL "headers" stripped off. These headers at the end of the
file tended to confuse file readers such as Easy View, and are probably not
widely useful once you've debugged sendmail (but who among us has done a
thorough job of that?).

It requires MacPerl by Matthias Neeracher and Tim Endres (and, of course,
Larry Wall), which is available for free download at the sumex-aim mirror
nearest you. It should work with MacPerl 4 or MacPerl 5, though I have only
used it with MacPerl 5.1.3r2 (21 Jan 1997).

To use this droplet, first save AOL mail as a text file, to anywhere but the
desktop. Next, select and drop the text files onto the droplet file, which
will write an output text file in the desktop folder. If the output file
looks satisfactory, you can delete the original file.

This was a good way to begin learning Perl, which I would recommend to anyone
who needs to fiddle with text files.

From: George Baltzell
Subject: Apple 56K int. modem scripts

These are modem (CCL) scripts for the Apple 56K internal modem.
They should be tried by anyone with this model of modem.
The reasons are:
1: Should improve throughput on all connections above 28.8Kbps.
2: Will fix certain problems of compatibility with 3Com digital (ISP) modems.
3: Captures most of the diagnostic information of the &v1 command.
4: Avoids the lack of guard time on the + + + escape sequence.
5: More detail to the Activity Log.

Better Amazon Sherlock plug-ins 1.1 update (better-amazon-sherlock-plug.hqx)

From: dsmith@execpc.com
Subject: Better Amazon Sherlock plug-ins 1.1 update

Better Amazon.com plug-ins for Apple's Sherlock feature in Mac OS 8.5.
Version 1.1 corrects the URL for downloading the latest version.

Enclosed are two Sherlock plug-ins for searching Amazon.com books and
music. These were created because any of the existing Amazon plug-ins I've
tried simply don't work correctly.

Generic Amazon plug-ins only search for books, not music, so I created a
separate music search. Shortly after creating this plug-in, another amazon
music plug-in turned up at a popular web site. In testing, I found that the
other book and music plug-ins did not return the full list of hits. In one
instance, a music search only returned two items where my music plug-in
returned over twenty! In addition, the other plug-ins included a separate
search for classical music which didn't work at all because it was
searching the books database. My single music plug-in correctly searches
both the popular and classical music databases.

Dto-loa 2.0 (dot-loa-20.hqx)

Download dot-loa-20.hqx (402,558 KB)

From: KarlBunker@aol.com
Subject: Dto-loa 2.0

Dot-loa 2.0 brings powerful new features and enhanced usability to the
Macintosh version of America Online's software.

To very briefly describe its highlight features, with Dot-loa you can:
* Log on to AOL while AOL is running in the background
* Run an "Automatic AOL" session with AOL in the background
* (New to 2.0) Have AOL continue to redial indefinitely until it connects
* (New to 2.0) Precisely schedule Auto-AOL sessions with a variety of options
* (New to 2.0) Run scheduled Auto-AOL sessions with AOL in the background
* (New to 2.0) Have Dot-loa notify you when new e-mail has been retrieved
from AOL

None of these things are possible with the AOL software itself. Normally,
while the AOL software is going through the process of dialing your modem,
connecting and signing you on, you are "stuck" in AOL. You can't switch to
another application until AOL has completed the connection process. (And this
is often a painfully long time.) Likewise, when AOL runs a scheduled Auto-AOL
session, it begins by "forcing" its way to the front. If you're trying to use
your Mac for something else at that moment, too bad; you'll have to wait for
AOL to finish connecting before you can switch it to the background.

With Dot-loa you don't have to stare endlessly at AOL's useless "progress"
screen, waiting for AOL to connect so you can get on with your life. You can
"Do Other Things" -- working productively in some other application,
blissfully unconcerned about how long it's taking AOL to connect. When AOL
does connect, Dot-loa will notify you with a beep and a flashing icon in the
menu bar. If AOL isn't running when you activate Dot-loa, Dot-loa will launch
it for you.

The new scheduling and e-mail notification features of Dot-loa will be
particularly attractive to those who depend on AOL for their e-mail service.
Dot-loa brings to AOL some of the most useful features of dedicated e-mail
applications such as Eudora. You can set Dot-loa to run Auto-AOL sessions
that check your e-mail at precisely controlled times or intervals, and have
it notify you if new mail has arrived. AOL remains in the background, so you
don't even have to look at AOL, much less have it "take over" your Mac for
some indeterminate length of time, until it has successfully downloaded new
mail for you. Dot-loa can then notify you of the new mail with either a small
floating window, or a flashing icon in the menu bar.

Shareware, $13.00.

Gebührenrechner 3.1

Der Gebührenrechner ist ein Programm zur Berechnung des günstigsten Anbieters
bei Call by Call Verbindungen.

hinzugekommen. Damit hat man alle wichtigen Telefonpartner im direkten
Zugriff. Einfacher geht es (fasst) nicht. auch sonst habe ich einige kleine
Ergänzungen vorgenommen, deren Aufzählung hier zu weit ginge.

Subject: Mac INIT Strings 2.1

Mac INIT Strings 2.1 Updated 04/17/98

Mac INIT Strings is a shareware utility that displays a list of modem INITialization strings categorized by manufacturer and model. These strings are meant for use with Macintosh computers. Upon registering, Version 2.1 will allow you to do the following:

* Test INITialization strings through your Mac's modem
* View string information from Open Transport/PPP/ARA Scripts
* View the URL of the modem manufacturer allowing you to launch the URL using an Internet Browser (you MUST have Internet Config 1.4 [or later] installed and configured on your Macintosh in order to launch a URL. Internet Config 1.4 is not included with the Mac INIT Strings Installer. Internet Config can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.share.com/internet-configuration/ ).
* Analyze an INITialization string and see what each command means

Mac INIT Strings requires the Apple Serial Tool 1.0.2 which is part of the Apple Communications ToolBox (CTB). The installer will place a copy of the Serial Tool 1.0.2 in your Extensions Folder requiring you to restart your machine after the installation process is complete.

Mac INIT Strings was built with Mac OS 8.1 and is therefore, Mac OS 8.1-compatible. You need System 7.5 (or later) and 4 MB of physical (installed) memory in order to use Mac INIT Strings.

Shareware Info:

At one time, Mac INIT Strings was freeware. Due to the number of hours and research that have gone into Mac INIT Strings 2.1, we've decided to make it our first shareware package with a $15.00 shareware fee. Please be sure to read the license agreeement included in the installer package. You must pay for this software in order to use all of it's features. Please support shareware - without paying for this software, there won't be another release.

Known Bugs/Limitations/Fixes:

* Registered users of Version 2.1 can view Open Transport/PPP/ARA Modem Scripts however, they cannot be edited. We've done this for a reason - mainly because we don't want to receive hundreds of e-mails and telephone calls from people needing help with either editing these scripts or putting them back together.

* In previous versions, some users reported that although the Serial Tool was installed in the Extensions Folder, Mac INIT Strings could not see the Serial Tool. Make sure that the Serial Tool is in fact, named "Serial Tool" - Mac INIT Strings looks for this file by name, not by creator. This problem should now be resolved with the release of Version 2.1.

* If you experience a "Port is in use by another application" or "Serial Port is busy" message, disable your fax software or any extensions and control panels that may use the serial port(s) on your Macintosh.

* When Mac INIT Strings indicates that an initialization string is "OK", this does not necessarily mean that the string is in fact, the correct string (ie: many modems can use a generic initialization string such as "AT&F1"). The database consists of recommended strings. Many of the strings contained in this database have been contributed by users. Some have been confirmed by manufacturers. The rest are the result of a lot of research on the Internet. We've done our best to provide the correct ones but we don't have 150 different modems to test all of these strings on!

* We cannot guarantee that all of the INIT Strings contained in the database will be 100% accurate. Some modem manufacturers have been kind enough to e-mail us a complete list of all of their modems and INIT Strings. Thank you for doing so. We encourage all of the manufacturers listed in the database to do the same.

* The Mac INIT Strings Installer will now install the software on Macs and PowerBooks equipped with black and white displays.

* Thank you to everyone for contributing your INIT Strings. We've received hundreds from all around the world and your feedback has been greatly appreciated.

Thanks and most of all - have fun. That's what the Mac's all about.

Long live Apple.

Subject: NetworkRun 2.0

I have written a script, NetworkRun, and updated it to
version 2.0. I wanted it to be available on a web site and
I asked info about that; that's how I got your address.

NetworkRun is a script suite that requires Akua Sweets,
Dialog Director 0.7, Jon¹s Commands 2.05, Users and Groups
& XCMD OSAX, plus Speech if the user wants NetworkRun to
use the Speech Manager. What NetworkRun can do:

--Send messages over the network
--Send messages & getting answers
--Send dummy alert messages (just for fun--with a lot of
settings) :-)
--Send the same message to several destinations
--Send the same message to every machine on your network
--Check & delete the contents of a certain folder on any
Mac on your network by name, date, kind, etc.
--Create an evironment report about any Mac on your
network
--Make a Mac beep/flash x times :^}
--And really much more!

NetworkRun works with a real preferences file. It has a
two-level security with a password and/or an enabler
application that can prevent NetworkRun's use. A read me
informs you about the exact use of each function. A Setup
application checks if your Mac is OK to use NetworkRun.

NetworkRun's archive is attached, I hope you will accept
my delivery.

Please place it on your wonderful site.

Thanks,

Among changes and additions to version 1.6 are:
€ The much awaited keyboard shortcuts are here, but with no UI yet:
- Use Command+Control+Escape to toggle the visibility of the NewsTicker
window.
- Use Command+Control+Right Arrow to load the next site immediately.
- Using the •T keyboard combination when in the Tracked Sites panel of
the Preferences dialog toggles the tracking state of all
currently-selected sites (those being tracked will not be tracked and
vice-versa).
€ The Ticker Appearance panel now has a checkbox which can turn on or
off the underlining of headlines.
€ More control over Tracked Site Information.
€ NewsTicker now supports a ³Local² preferences file (one placed next to
the NewsTicker application). This enables running more than one copy of
NewsTicker on the same machine with different settings.
(I use this to have one copy track stocks, another copy to track news.
Maybe in the future a third copy could track email...)
€ Faster site switching using a sub menu of the contextual menu which
enables switching between all tracked sites.
€ The NewsTicker window has more anchoring options.

PageComm
Paging Software for the Mac

Version: 0.72
Shareware - $5

Introduction
Welcome to PageComm, a numeric paging program designed to monitor your
phone line and notify you via your pager whenever you receive a call.

When combined with a remote call pick up answering machine, you can easily
set up a voice messaging system by having PageComm notify you whenever you
have a message.

Features
- Pages you whenever you have a call (after a user-defined number of
rings). PageComm can page you for every call, only calls after a certain
number of rings and/or when you have messages on your answering machine.

- Distinguishes whether a message has been left on your answering machine
(using a check message delay feature) and will notify you accordingly.

- PageComm will page in the number of rings for each call as a prefix for
the numeric message, or if a message was left, a special user-defined
prefix to distinguish the call.

- All phone calls are recorded in a log, displaying the time of call, date
of call, the number of rings, and whether or not a message was left.

- PageComm is fully customizable, thus making it easy for you to set up the
program specifically for your pager.

Enjoy!

PhoneTech 1.0.1 (phonetech.hqx)

Download phonetech.hqx (431,432 KB)

From: KarlBunker@aol.com
Subject: PhoneTech 1.0.1

PhoneTech is a versatile utility that provides many powerful phone-related
technologies that usually require expensive software, special hardware, or
both.

Working through any ordinary modem, PhoneTech provides the following features:

* Includes a compact and easy to use "Phone Book" with which you can store
any number of names and phone numbers for quick access.
* "Keep trying" technology: if the line is busy or there is no answer,
PhoneTech can retry the number periodically until you get through. You don't
even have to pick up the phone until you're successfully connected.
* System wide hotkey allows you to switch instantly between your modem (for
dialing) and your phone (for speaking) from within any application. Work at
your Mac in comfort while PhoneTech toils in the background getting through to
your party.
* Voice mail macros: fight automated phone answering systems with your own
automation! Do you call companies that require you to press 1, then press 3,
then enter your 16-digit account number, then enter your 5-digit password? Now
you can "script" the process and do it all with one mouse click.
* A call timer can show you the accumulated time of phone calls, with an
option to automatically time only long distance calls.
* Keep notes on each entry in your PhoneTech phone book; these notes can be
easily updated, automatically date-stamped, and up to 32K long.
* Sophisticated "import" feature allows you to transfer names and phone
numbers from other databases to the PhoneTech phone book.
* "Listen In" feature turns your modem into a one-way speaker phone. If
you're put on hold, you can use this to listen in on the line without holding
the receiver to your ear.
* Automatic translation of text phone numbers, such as "1-800-SOS-APPL".
* Integration with Qualcomm's Now Contact(tm), so that Now Contact can
automatically use PhoneTech, with its "keep trying" feature and other
capabilities, to dial phone numbers.
* And, as they say, "much more!"

Virtually everyone who spends any time at a Mac has to make phone calls while
they work. Some do this only occasionally, while others make calls constantly
as part of their job. Either way, the process can be made vastly more
convenient and less troublesome, without having to learn a complex new
hardware or software system, for the vanishingly small investment of $20.00.

Minimum requirements for PhoneTech are any Mac with a 68020 processor or
better (includes all Power Macs) running System 7.1 or later, a modem and a
phone on the same line as the modem.

PhoneTech is shareware and costs only $20.00. This download version is
complete and not disabled in any way; registered customers receive a code to
turn off "please register" reminders.

Absolutely no warranty applies, especially as to the internal format,

Red Pencil is a search engine and 'server' for Press Releases. It was
established to collect and disseminate information in the form most useful
to the various news media, and to make it possible for small organisations
and even individuals to gain the same kind of breadth of access to the
media that only large organisations have previous enjoyed.

Professional news-journalists can use it as an automated news-gatherer,
using the built-in automatic delivery system - which is clever enough to
select which kind of Press Releases to send, once it's been given suitable
parameters to match.

This archive is a 'roamer' submission-form for Red Pencil ... meaning that
you can load it as a local file in your browser, and use it to compose and
submit Press releases 'off line'. When you're ready, you can hit the
'submit' button on the form, and your computer will automatically dial up
and send off your entry, which will be available to a world-wide audience
only moments later.

For further information, please visit the Red Pencil website at

From: "Kevin Raner"
Subject: Star Gate 1.3.2

Here is Star Gate 1.3.2, the latest version of my Mac-PC file transfer
utility.

Star Gate is a utility that allows easy transfer of files between Mac and
PC,
or PC and PC, via a serial link. If you need to transfer files between
computers
and don't want to bear the expense of network cards, transceivers and
commercial network software then you need Star Gate.

Star Gate is easy to configure and requires only a cheap null-modem cable.
It
can transfer whole directory trees and reconstruct the tree on the receiving
computer. It also performs text translation so the line endings of text
files
are always correct for the receiving computer. The interface is simple and
convenient. To send a file to another computer simply drag it to the
outgoing
directory and it will automatically appear in the incoming folder of the
other
computer. Forget about protocols, packets, CRCs etc. just drag your files!

Note: the software requires a serial port on your Mac.

Subject: Steam 2.2

Steam 2.2 is an OS X application that reads and stores the schedules
for the user's choice of BBC Radio stations and displays a list of
what's on now in a small window. It will remind you when a favorite
programme is about to start and allow you to quickly start that
programme playing through RealPlayer.

Although this functionality may seem similar to just browsing the BBC
Web Site, there are many advantages to using Steam. Among these are the
fact that everything is displayed in your own time zone, minimal use
of the screen, checking schedules while off-line, checking old
listings, searching listings on any station concurrently and many more.
And you get reminders so you don't miss your favorite programme.

New in this release:
Compatibility with RealPlayer 10
Access to the World Service and Radio 3 archives
More user-friendly reaction to corrupted data files

This is a must for any Mac user who listens to the BBC.

Requirements: OS X 10.2 and up
Price: The program is free, though a $5 donation is suggested.

From: schaerer@ifi.unizh.ch
Subject: tcpdump helper 1.0: create tcpdump filter expressions

tcpdump helper 1.0 (for Mac OS X)

This little program helps you create filter expressions for the UNIX
packet capturing tool tcpdump. It will not run tcpdump by itself; use
it together with the Terminal or with any program that accepts such
expressions.

The program opens a window containing various fields and buttons. Use
these to enter your filter conditions. The corresponding filter
expression will appear in a result field. Copy or drag this to where
you need it.

This is KindWare[tm] - a gift to the whole of MacKind[tm]. Enjoy,
share, and be kind[tm] to one another.

From: valuefax@ix.netcom.com
Subject: ValueFax 2.0.15

ValueFax is the first shareware fax program for the Macintosh.
This is a commercial quality, full function product with QuickFax,
fax driver, full reception and conversion of the fax in background,
installer, and an online manual. Versions of this product have
been shipping commercially under different names for several years.
The basic product has been thoroughly tested in a variety of Mac
configurations using a variety of Class 1 and Class 2 modems (this
product will not work with modems that support Class 2.0 only or
with Apple's express modems or with Apple's Geoport modems).

Why would you want to use this product?

* you bought an external fax modem for your PC but you would
also like to use it with your Mac.
* you bought an external fax modem for the Mac but the software
that came with it is too "lite" for your work. The bundled
software may not even work in your configuration.
* you are not happy with your current fax software because it is
old and does not have all the features of ValueFax. What's more,
your current software looks like it has been ported from its
PC (ugh!) version.
* Your company owns several Macs and you are looking for a site
license instead of buying individual copies for everyone.

Support is available via email to valuefax@ix.netcom.com
We want this product to work in your configuration and we will
do our best to make it work.
