extension under System 7 - the configuration features just aren't

The AppleShareSetup control panel lets you set or disable various
options supported by the AppleShare Chooser extension. With
AppleShareSetup, you can:
* Make specific AppleShare alerts "time-out" after a set amount of
time. For example, you can make the "The file server is closing down
in x minute(s)" alert automatically dismiss itself after 10 seconds.
* Completely disable all AppleShare alerts.
* Disable AppleShare "Greeting" messages.
* Disable some auto-mount features.
Full Balloon Help is provided under System 7. Turn on Balloon
Help (and read your AppleShare manuals) if you can't figure this
control panel out.

Fixes for demo version ATM 0.5:
1. Now creates its own Network Data folder if its not found, this means you
can run ATM from anywhere on your disk. The program will not bomb if
this folder is not found.
2. The Application memory size has been pre-set to 750k, this allows ATM to
run under Multifinder.
3. The "Echo" function has been improved. Echo as an implementation under
DDP does not seem to work in the prescribed manner in "Inside Mac"
Vols II and V, and also Inside Appletalk. I have developed an algorhthym
that takes care of about 99% of ECHO, some errors still occur but very few.

ATM 0.4
This little program was developed as an exercise, just like a lot of
other peoples I guess. In the writting of this program I learn't that there
are a few untruths or things just plain left unsaid. For instance you would
think that all Macs and LaserWriters would have AEP (AppleTalk Echo Protocol)
built in, this seems not to be the case.
When you activate this program and after the Mac has finished making its
report of the network, you can double click on the desired node in the list
and 100 packets are sent to that node using AEP. AEP is a possible test of
the line quality between nodes, this is not strictly true, ie. if a PC node
is buisy packets can be lost and therefore alter your interpretation
of the results.
The display consists of Bridge data, Zone data, currently visible
entities, an AEP dissplay and two fake boxes. There are also a couple of
fake menus, as you will see the interface kind of evolved in the writting.
Its a simple matter to remove the unwanted stuff.
The program sorts all the NVE's (Network Visible Entities) Alphabetically
and by Node address, other information is provided along with these files,ie,
numbers of nodes,data and time etc and Zone plus Bridge data. The program has
been of use at this site because there are well over 150 NVE's to deal with.
I would have liked to implement a graphic load averager, but I get too
buisy these days to sit down and concentrate on it. Anyway hope its of use

One of the most common questions I get (just after the -903 from AESend) is
"How do I get rid of the linking password dialog for Guest access?" Greg
Anderson wrote a marvelously skanky INIT and code resource for doing this.
It allows you to have transparent Guest access for Apple Events. If you
install the INIT, you get no dialogs if guest access is allowed. If you
use the code resource, you get no dialogs for that program.
Mind you, this works with 7.x and may break at any moment, but it is currently
the ONLY way to get past the dialog.

Subject: Guest Lister 1.2
Guest Lister is the fastest, most efficient way to find out about all
those shared volumes of useful stuff out there on your AppleTalk network
with GUEST access.
It's a HyperCard stack and uses some of the Rinaldi externals. Requires
HyperCard 2 or later, the player is fine.
When launched, it builds a zone list. Click a zone and it builds a list
of servers with guest access enabled, then it builds a list of all
volumes on those guest access servers.
A single click on a volume in the list will mount that volume (very
quickly).
For determined surfers there is a Report feature that can (if you really
want) write a text file containing a list of all files on all guest
access servers in a given zone. You can also choose to just get a folder
list, or just to go 1 level deep. (That's enough to get an idea of what's
out there).
You may also want to get hold of "AppleShare Control" which lets you turn
off those pesky server welcome dialogs that some people enable. It's in
comm/atlk/ on Info-Mac.

Helios LanTest is an utility designed to test file server performance in a
Macintosh environment. It tests the following operations:
* Creating 100 files of 20KB each
* Opening and closing 100 files.
* Remove 100 files.
* Write 3 MB to a file.
* Read 3 MB from a file.
* Lock and unlock 4000 records.
* Read a directory containing 320 entries.
* Print a 3 MB PostScript file to the selected printer.
For faster networks (e.g. 100baseT) the size of the 3 MB file can be
increased to 30MB. LanTest 2.5.0 adds an option for very fast networks
(e.g. Gigabit EThernet) to increase the file size to 300MB.
The utility can perform a mixture of these tests using a given number
of times and display the timings as well as an average. All results are
written into an ASCII logfile as well. The utility will count the
number of concurrently running LanTest applications from the same
settings document.
As all benchmarks, the results must be interpreted carefully and all
test parameters should be documented together with the results.
Changes since version 2.0.1:
* Added an option for very fast networks to increase the test file size
to 300MB.

Intercom! is a "poor man's" voice intercom, usable by any machine that is
capable of running HyperCard 2.1. It offers "near real-time" text AND
voice communications, for those with older Macintoshes that don't have AV
capability. It allows people to send voice and/or text messages over an
Appletalk network, by recording a sound in HyperCard, saving it to a file,
and copying the file over the network. When it hits its destination, the
file is automatically opened, and the sound automatically played. This
creates a "near real-time" environment, that is quite acceptable for those
with lower-end Macintoshes.

Subject: MacPing 3.0 DEMO
MacPing tests how well your AppleTalk or IP (Internet Protocol)
network carries data packets. Just as a sonar or radar system
sends a signal and waits for the echo, MacPing sends "probe"
packets and waits for responses from the various devices connected
to that network. If all the responses return, then your network is
probably working well. If a few (or many) responses are lost,
MacPing can help you diagnose what's wrong.
MacPing differs from other network testing programs in that it
tests in parallel all the devices on a particular AppleTalk
network or zone, or devices in a range of IP addresses. This

Note that MacPing will not flood the network with packets:
it sends only one packet into the network at any time.

Requirements
MacPing requires at least a Macintosh Plus computer, running
System 6.0.5 or newer. It also requires a network connection,
either LocalTalk, EtherTalk, or dial-up connections such as
Apple Remote Access (ARA), Shiva Dial-In, or others. MacPing
is compatible with System 7.0 and works with both Phase I and
Phase II AppleTalk software.
If you wish to test IP devices, you must also install
MacTCP 2.0.4 or newer.
This demonstration version of MacPing will run for thirty days
after it is first run. It is also limited to testing a maximum
of 5 zones. Otherwise, it has all the capabilities of the full
MacPing versions.

MetriTalk is an AppleTalk Device Driver 'adev' file that provides

Metricom radios are channel-hopping spread-spectrum packet radio devices

100kbit/sec. With a clear line-of-sight path they can have a range of

Since a lot of people have asked for the MacII version even before it

The Red Queen is a small Control Panel compatible with both System 7.xx and

much the same way a modem with compression does -- by compressing the data
thereby effecting faster throughput.

This application creates documents which, when double-clicked, quickly
log you into an AppleShare server.
The documents store an alias to the server and your username and
password. (The password is encrypted).
To create a new document, open just the ServerMounter application (ie:
don't open a document), drag the icon of the server you want to store
into the document window, (you'll see the machine, volume, and zone
appear), enter your username and password, and save the document.
To use a document, just double-click the document. If ServerMounter is
launched by opening a document it will quickly log you in and then quit
itself.
The app works by resolving an alias to the server and poking the required
keystrokes into the event queue to type the password and username in the
log-in dialog. So, it's a bit of a "hack" and I know that in some
situations, background processes and extensions can defeat this scheme by
gobbling my keystrokes.
Requires 68020 or better and a system with drag & drop.
Anyway, hope you like it, I find it saves me time. ServerMounter is free,
but I'd like you to contact me for permission to include it in
collections that people pay for.

SetDateTime enables you to maintain synchronized Macintosh clocks on an
AppleTalk network that has an AppleShare or AFP conformant file server on
it. It is intended to be used in a public lab environment, where users
often mess around with the date and time settings of the Macintosh clock.
SetDateTime can run on the users' Macs when they start their Macs if it is
made a startup application. On Macs running System 7, you can drop it in
the Startup Items folder inside the System Folder.
SetDateTime does a Guest login (or optionally a name and password login) to
the file server, gets the server's date and time, and sets the Mac's clock
to it.

How often do you use the Chooser to connect to an AppleShare server
volume, and then realize that you need another volume on that same
server? Often if you mount one volume, you will want to mount the
related volumes at some time.
Enter Sibling Rivalry. After it is installed, you can Command-Click on
the Finder icon for an AppleShare server volume (not an alias) and a
popup menu will appear that lists the other volumes on that server
(it's "siblings"). If you select the name of a sibling from the menu,
Sibling Rivalry will automatically mount that volume on your computer.
Notes:
* Sibling Rivalry has no interface... it takes up no space on your
screen, since it only appears after you specifically invoke it.
* You can mount *every* sibling on a server by adding the Option
key to the Command-Click sequence, and selecting "All Volumes".

SingleTalk is an AppleTalk device driver ('adev') that allows you to
keep AppleTalk turned on without actually needing any real physical
network interface.
There are a number of reasons that you might want to do this.
Peter Lewis's FTPd communicates with the file system by using the Apple
Filing Protocol, as provided by AppleShare and by System 7's Personal
File Sharing. The file server that FTPd communicates with can be anywhere
on the AppleTalk network, but most people run FTPd and Personal File
Sharing on the same Mac. If you turn the AppleTalk software off in the
Chooser just because your (Internet-connected) Mac is not connected to
any AppleTalk network, then Personal File Sharing and FTPd won't be able
to work -- they won't be able to communicate with each other. If you turn
AppleTalk on in the Chooser, then the Mac requires you to have LocalTalk
(or some other physical interface) active.
There are a number of reasons that requiring LocalTalk is a bad idea. For
a start, it ties up the Printer port on your Mac. A lot of new Macs (like
Duos and the 500 series PowerBooks) only have one serial port, making
this especially undesirable. If your Internet connection is through a
modem (using SLIP or PPP), then turning on LocalTalk on the Printer port
leaves you nowhere to plug in your modem. Also, on PowerBooks, powering
the LocalTalk hardware consumes battery power, which is pointless if you
not actually connected to anyone else.
Another program that uses AppleTalk for communication is Bolo. You can
run two copies of Bolo on the same Mac to play against a "Brain", but
you need AppleTalk on.
Instead of a switch in the Chooser to turn the network software on and
off, Apple should have made the AppleTalk software always on, and
provided controls to turn each network interface on and off.
That's the idea behind SingleTalk. It allows you to keep AppleTalk
turned on without needing to have your LocalTalk interface (or any
other physical interface) active.
SingleTalk is freeware. For further details see the enclosed ReadMe file.
You should never have any reason to turn AppleTalk off again.
Version 1.1 of SingleTalk uses a different id number to avoid a conflict
with "IP Remote A/Talk".

Talk&Mail is an AppleTalk communication program for Macintosh. It is simple,
easy to use, but has more powerful features than those known to the Unix world.
One can initiate communication request from local macintosh with anyone on a
remote macintosh running Talk&Mail program, as long as two macintoshes are
connected on "AppleTalk Internet". The formidably-sounded "AppleTalk Internet"
can be as simple as two macintoshes connected via a single wire (through their
modem or printer port), or as extended as thousands of macintoshes connected

other users on the network can identify him/her, and one is ready to initiate
or receive communication services provided by Talk&Mail program.
II. Using Talk & Mail:
When Talk & Mail starts up, it provides a dialog box for user to enter user
name which identifies you (your macintosh) on the network, other macintoshes
running Talk & Mail will be able to see your user name on their user list under
your macintosh network zone. You can put Talk & Mail in the background so that
it will be watching for communication request initiated by other users on the
AppleTalk network running Talk & Mail, you will be notified in case there are
Talk request or Notification or email/file sent to you by a remote user. If you
like to initiate a communication service with a remote user, turn the Talk &
Mail to the foreground and use the menus to initiate request:
% Talk:
Select this menu item to initiate conversation with another macintosh on the
network. You will get a list of Mac zones (AppleTalk networks, especially large
ones, are usually divided into multiple sub-networks called zones, under each
zone, there are list of macintoshes). The zone that your macintosh resides on
will be automatically selected. Choose a zone in which the remote user you like
to talk to resides (double click on the item), you will get a list of user
names which macintoshes are running Talk & Mail. Select the one you want to
talk to, a conversation request will be sent to the remote macintosh (which
must have Talk & Mail running). The remote user will get notified of your
conversation request, he/she has the options of accepting or denying of your
request. If remote user accepts your request, a communication channel will be
set up, you and the remote user will have two windows pop up on the respective
macintosh screens, which allow you to type in your words at the same time read
his/her words. There are list of buttons which functions are self explainary.
% Note:
Note allows you to send a text of notice to a remote user running Talk & Mail.
It's a quick way of sending information to the remote user without the
disruption of initiating a conversation by using Talk. The notification text
will be sent to the remote user and a modal dialog will pop up on the remote
macintosh which contains the text and the sender information.
% Mail:
Mail is the least disruptive of all. You can sent a email to the remote user
running Talk & Mail, the mail will be automatically received and storied in the
remote user mailbox.
% Ship:
Ship is the function that lets you send a file (any file type, whether it's a
data file or a macintosh application) over AppleTalk network to the remote
user. It's more convenient than Apple file sharing service since there's no
file sharing set up and disk mounting to do in order to send the file.
% Change Username:
This lets you change your user name which will appear on other macintoshes
running Talk & Mail.
% Don't Interrupt:
This lets you specify no-interrupt period which the Talk & Mail running on your
macintosh (usually in background) will automatically reject conversation
request from other users without interrupting what you are doing. The remote
user will get notified of the fact that you are not in the conversation mood
and get auto rejected, so there wonUt be any bad feelings.
% Help:
Provides this on-line help.
% Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear:
Talk & Mail has a built in text editor to edit the mail or notification text.
These functions are the same as the ordinary text editing functions.
% Close:
Close current window.
% Quit:
Quit Talk & Mail. Your user name will disappear from the user lists of other
users running Talk & Mail, so thereUs no way other users can initiate any
communication services with you until the next time you restart Talk & Mail.
ItUs recommended that you put Talk & Mail or its alias in the RStartup ItemsS
folder in the RSystemS folder, so that it will automatically be started every
time you turn on your macintosh.
III. Registration:
The single copy license is $20 for Talk&Mail, two copy licenses is $35 (you
need two separate licenses for two macintosh to communicate via Talk&Mail in
full operating mode). Multi-license and site-license are available and rates
are negotiable. The program took me lots of time and effort, I would sincerely
appreciate if you support it by registering.
IV. About the Author's Other Software:
Besides Talk&Mail, I have developed two other Mac software: SpaceInvader!
(video game), and PianoSim II (piano simulation program). These programs are
also available on CompuServe, American On-line, and carried by several
shareware distribution companies. They are also available on Internet via
anonymous FTP from: sumex-aim.stanford.edu, or mac.archive.umich.edu.

TeleTalk enables you to open text conversation channels with other users
over a LocalTalk network (much like the chat feature found on most BBS
software, or the 'talk' command on the Unix operating system). Each

This SoftScreen Extension fixes a problem when using Timbuktu Pro 1.0 to
control a Macintosh which does not have a monitor attached (a "headless
server").
You do NOT need this extension if the Timbuktu Pro host has a monitor. In

700, Quadra 900, or Quadra 950.

The Time Server system consists of two parts. The Time document which
is the combination Chooser and startup document, and the Time Server
which is a startup document. They must be distributed together and they
must not be modified in any way. They must not be sold for profit.
Non-profit user groups have permission to add the Time Server system to their
libraries. Profit groups may not include the Time Server system as part of
their software offerings in any form at any price without written
permission from John Raymonds.
The documentation is available by dropping the Chooserdocument on the
system folder, selecting the document in the Chooser itself and clicking
the Help button.
For convenience of the netters I have collected this documentation and put
it in a Read Me document enclosed in this file.

Here's a new version of my ToggleAT FKEY. This update is very minor and
simply allows you to turn AppleTalk back off if it is set to start on the
next reboot. This isn't hit often, but some guy was whining at me. ;)
ToggleAT turns AppleTalk on and off with a simple key press. Handy for
PowerBooks.

a Mac Plus or a Mac SE. It has been used most on Mac II's and the SE/30.
There is no documentation for Watch nor is it a supported product. Use it at
your own risk. It is freely distributed but Cayman Systems, Inc. still
